Carver writes with meticulous economy, suddenly bringing a life into focus in a similar way to the paintings of Edward Hopper. The stories are filled with Carver being able to choose a short phrase or sentence that can capture the entire mood of a scene. I had the feeling that in order to write this book, the author kept flipping through his tv channels, and writing whatever nonsense appeared on the screen.
His book is a good example of telling rather than showing, but the thing is, he has nothing to tell. I made it through the whole book and basically just wondered what the hell I had wasted my time on. Mel McGinnis is a cardiologist, and sometimes that gives him the right. These are emotions worth enduring for the price of reading this beautiful prose.
