As young Gaius and Marcus are trained in the art of combat-under the tutelage of one of Rome’s most fearsome gladiators-Rome itself is being rocked by the art of treachery and ambition, caught in a tug-of-war as two rival generals, Marius and Sulla, push the empire toward civil war. There are any od of things with which I took exception, but first and foremost is his treatment of Caesar’s mother, Aurelia Cotta.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. The gates of Rome, is about the youth of Julius Caesar, the most famous Roman who has ever lived. The Khans weren’t exactly Comedy Central material and yet there’s so much more humor and personality in that series.
She isn’t such a bad bird and can be forgiving if you feel the need as an author to break free and dabble. Dec 03, Will M.
Other than Sulla marching on Rome, both events are purely fiction. Conn Iggulden is the acclaimed author of the Emperor novels, which chronicle the life of Julius Caesar, and the Conqueror series, which is based on the lives of Mongol warlords Genghis, Ogedai, and Kublai Khan. In a true masterpiece of historical fiction, Iggulden takes us on a breathtaking igguldfn through ancient Rome, sweeping us into a realm of tyrants and slaves, of dark intrigues and seething passions. The characters lift right out and it could honestly have been set anywhere and any time. Second, Caesar was known to be proscribed by Sulla and very nearly lost his life because of it.

This is ultimately little more than a protracted introduction to a bigger story, which Iggulden will surely go on to tell. Both will have known love, loss, and violence. I found it difficult conb care about Caesar, who fluctuates between iggupden aristocratic child and rich California play boy during the course of the book.

I have to say this is fairly basic stuff. Gates of Rome Emperor Author s: I just wasn’t keen on this one – I ended up skim reading the second half of the book and skipping to the end. Mithridates is referred to as a “Greek general” who had “taken one of roem cities.
If the Roman Empire had taken as long to rise and fall as this novel takes to discover a main character and a plot, most of the world would still be wearing togas today. The story continues from there with their inevitable splitting into two different paths in life. It’s not that annoying to be honest, unlike some YA books I’ve read.
Part of my decision to listen to this one was because he was the narrator. Sulla immediately begins taking vengeance on all of Marius’s friends, who are hunted down and killed.
Some of the men live too richly for their purses, if you understand me. When Sulla arrives outside the city walls, Marius is shocked to discover that Sulla had left behind donn contingent of his men in the city, who now appear disguised as firefighter slaves and attack Marius’s soldiers from behind.

I’m a school librarian Even though I love history and historical fiction, I’ve never found Roman history interesting. There are other Roman series out there far superior.
This is one of those books I think you will need to discover for yourself. Iggulden admits in his closing historical remarks that he took great liberties with the historical record and proceeds to gages the real history.
